In place of these buildings the property owner plans to erect a modern mixed commercial and residential building. This new building is inappropriate to the prevailing scale, design and surface treatments of the predominantly 1- and 2- story buildings of the Warren Waterfront Historic District. <p></p><p>The Warren Waterfront Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 (updated in 2003). The 19th century buildings at 113 and 119 Water Street are inventoried in the district documentation as "Contributing Buildings" and have the same status as individually listed buildings. <br /></p><p>Warren Preservation Society, the Warren Heritage Foundation, and the Massasoit Historical Association have joined forces to retain legal counsel to stop this thoughtless demolition of two buildings closely associated with the historic character of Warren's greatest asset and economic engine--the Waterfront Historic District. </p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;"><i>Join us in contributing to the legal fund to stop the demolition of these historic buildings and to protect the future of Water Street!</i></span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><i><a href="https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/fundraising/aa91fceb-ce51-46eb-95e6-4222abf69035"><span style="font-size: large;">Click Here to Donate with Zeffy</span></a><br /></i></span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">If you prefer to mail your contribution please remit your payment to:</span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><b>Warren Preservation Society, PO Box 624, Warren, RI 02885</b></span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Please make your check out to <b>Warren Preservation Society</b>.</span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Be sure to include "SAVE WATER STREET" on the Memo. <i>Thanks! </i></span></p><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj239ioNyjjBqgRnG4Wpf3nrfDSYl4Tsv4ztzpG1v5XrqJDO6Zwj8RgLimxftsppSOJKUraoslLlpMeQf-vecGHXFgjlVlhecFOzE2GcSlW5cMSwaVfB3ZpyGE1a1EFKDYRcimwoq9lRHYtaCEMVPJaUcE0yoq4iSLWZlatohZYx5KYWC1dClJ3x3yh/s3031/113%20water%20a-1%202.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2157" data-original-width="3031" height="228" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj239ioNyjjBqgRnG4Wpf3nrfDSYl4Tsv4ztzpG1v5XrqJDO6Zwj8RgLimxftsppSOJKUraoslLlpMeQf-vecGHXFgjlVlhecFOzE2GcSlW5cMSwaVfB3ZpyGE1a1EFKDYRcimwoq9lRHYtaCEMVPJaUcE0yoq4iSLWZlatohZYx5KYWC1dClJ3x3yh/w320-h228/113%20water%20a-1%202.jpg" title="113 Water Street" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">113 Water Street </td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7M1uI5I7hS743fWZqWnluTRbvv8wAxz0MLvp5MpXtjq9olb8CvR3woVNy51YvYTHgzJGZzRzxGwSxTJtU1nFfLignj78U4xhuGSEHDnvKQ3FqSvRnwzMaRKRdmwqmpXrsxYQAxuzi8qNYQHsu8lZnsGnyyrMG0hiQK3be6rxWW_1x93n8i7YBxnth/s3042/119%20water%202.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2227" data-original-width="3042" height="234" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7M1uI5I7hS743fWZqWnluTRbvv8wAxz0MLvp5MpXtjq9olb8CvR3woVNy51YvYTHgzJGZzRzxGwSxTJtU1nFfLignj78U4xhuGSEHDnvKQ3FqSvRnwzMaRKRdmwqmpXrsxYQAxuzi8qNYQHsu8lZnsGnyyrMG0hiQK3be6rxWW_1x93n8i7YBxnth/s320/119%20water%202.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">119 Water Street </td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5959149617040403076.post-22396118863131029142022-12-04T16:47:00.008-05:002022-12-29T08:34:01.776-05:002022 Annual Fund<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 11pt; text-align: start;">We hope you will help us by making a year-end contribution to our Annual Fund Campaign. Thank you to everyone in attendance for providing much appreciated community support. </span></span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-weight: normal;">WPS will continue to be involved and keep the community informed about this important preservation issue.</span></p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEYXLxo-eLTyN7qGfR9_PNYUrBAz_ulprCFeGke9Zua4wNvuQ51cvsyiv83vO-BFQNFvcy4yFjX1LKLhcjETOxvWuODvsChhHU-H39ebi7vT8Jyc7Y0XJh3H56UCaMzJgl3BoB7C18BheamL3KaXYpuAiB_9F_p03tBbcLWZwk7-hfJDqAFOWk7n9w/s1161/Postcard%20early%2020th%20century%20copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="586" data-original-width="1161" height="162" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEYXLxo-eLTyN7qGfR9_PNYUrBAz_ulprCFeGke9Zua4wNvuQ51cvsyiv83vO-BFQNFvcy4yFjX1LKLhcjETOxvWuODvsChhHU-H39ebi7vT8Jyc7Y0XJh3H56UCaMzJgl3BoB7C18BheamL3KaXYpuAiB_9F_p03tBbcLWZwk7-hfJDqAFOWk7n9w/s320/Postcard%20early%2020th%20century%20copy.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-weight: normal;"><br /></span><p></p><div><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></div><p></p></div></div></div></h4>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5959149617040403076.post-45417775554100733182021-12-13T18:31:00.008-05:002021-12-13T19:00:14.863-05:00Donate to our Annual Fund<form action="https://www.paypal.com/donate" method="post" style="text-align: center;" target="_top">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Thank you to everyone who joined us on Thursday June 20th for our Annual Meeting at the Maxwell House and the Dedication of The Middle Passage Historic Site Marker at the Town Wharf on Water Street. Middle Passage Committee members and WPS Board Members Pat Mues and Sarah Weed presented the newest addition to our marker series in a moving ceremony that featured a group reading of the names of the enslaved men and women who lived in Warren. The sign is permanently located across from the Captain Charles Collins House, one of the financiers of the <i>Abigail</i>, the first slave ship that was launched from Warren in 1789. The ceremony was attended by members and guests from the Newport Middle Passage Committee and Warren town officials. This marker was paid for primarily with funds from a RI State Legislative Grant and we are extremely proud of its presence on the Town Wharf where it will serve to educate the public on the role Rhode Island and Warren played in the American transatlantic slave trade.</div>
